Vancouver Neighbourhood Guides

Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant is a vibrant, eclectic area of east meets west, known for its curious stores, heritage buildings, artistic residents, and arts-focused festivals.

Mount Pleasant is popular with first-time homebuyers, urban professionals, and families. The Mount Pleasant area runs from False Creek southeast and up the slope toward the busy Mount Pleasant shopping district, where Broadway, Kingsway, and Main Street meet. Mount Pleasant is known as one of the more up and coming neighbourhoods, especially in the communities surrounding Vancouver’s downtown peninsula. With its eclectic mix of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, heritage homes, condo developments, pedestrian-friendly streets, and accessibility to transit, including the 10th Avenue Bike Route, the 99 B-Line bus, and the Canada Line, Mountain Pleasant has become one the city’s hottest real estate markets.

Depending on whom you ask, the community is undergoing a “rapid and exciting transformation” or at risk of losing the very characteristics that made it attractive in the first place. No matter your opinion, though, this neighbourhood is growing, and all the while continuously welcoming new families.

The charming neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant provides a blend of residential homes combined with a mixture of phenomenal businesses, making this a truly dynamic area. This recently gentrified neighbourhood provides locals with superb access to shops, dining, schools, parks, bike paths, and public transportation. A combination of single-family homes, apartments, and townhomes make this area suitable for individuals and families from all walks of life.

Mount Pleasant is swarmed by locals picnicking, practicing alfresco yoga, and shopping at the Sunday farmer’s market, while you will also find many of the cities most beautiful murals here. Compared to downtown Vancouver, there’s a slower and more relaxed pace of life, with a family-centric vibe. With south Main Street going right straight through this area, residents need not go far to access all that this neighbourhood has to provide.

Breweries

For many locals and visitors, the neighborhood’s biggest draw is the incredible number of craft breweries paying homage to the history of Brewery Creek. Starting at East 2nd Avenue and strolling up to East 8th Avenue, you’ll pass a handful of tasting rooms, each showcasing the city’s thriving craft brew culture. Top picks include Main Street Brewing Company , R&B Brewing, and 33 Acres Brewing.

Restaurants

Mount Pleasant is a grand place to find eclectic eats that will take your taste buds on a journey to the Middle East, Malaysia, South India, or Peru. This is also an ideal “hood” to nosh on health-conscious vegetarian and vegan fare.

Shopping

Mount Pleasant’s independent nature translates to its local boutiques and vintage stores. This is a great neighbourhood to pick up one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Beer fans can double down by picking up a growler at one of the breweries and filling it with craft brew as a local souvenir that can be enjoyed back home. Or, opt for a different kind of brew by purchasing a bag of beans from one of the district’s many acclaimed coffee roasters.

Fashion fiends can browse for retro clothing and stylish antiques at shops like 8th & Main and Mintage. There are also plenty of indie stores selling eclectic knick-knacks perfect for your windowsill or coffee table. Pay a visit to Bird on a Wire Creations and Much and Little.

Schools

Mount Pleasant is well served in schools; Fraser Elementary, Edith Cavell Elementary, Mount Pleasant, Florence Nightingale, and Fraser Elementary are all primary schools in this neighbourhood. For secondary schools, residents can choose from Sir Charles Tupper Secondary, Templeton Secondary, and Vancouver Technical.

Community Centre

The Mount Pleasant Community Centre features a gym, climbing wall, fitness centre, dance studios, and multipurpose rooms. It also offers a civic centre with a Vancouver Public Library, a child development centre, cafes, and outdoor spaces. It is indeed a new jewel for the Mount Pleasant East community.

Festivals and Murals

Mount Pleasant is home to many festivals, including The Drift Art on Main, Music on Main, Car Free Day, the Autumn Shift Festival, and the Vancouver Mural Festival. The large number of beautiful murals painted on the sides of many of the Mount Pleasant buildings add a splash of colour, and provide a platform for Vancouver’s diverse art scene while contributing to the city’s cultural legacy.

With strong growth in the neighbourhood, there has been a surge of multi-story, strata-titled buildings with higher-end condos and lofts. Mount Pleasant East was historically inhabited by the artistic community but has more recently become the choice of young, professional singles and families. As a result of its quirky/artistic reputation, the neighbourhood also attracts a very “hip” crowd that adds to its unique personality.

Your Life After Work

A stroll through one of the Mount Pleasant Parks is an excellent way to unwind after a stressful day; bring your dog or a book and find a tree to sit under and enjoy the evening. Head to one of the many breweries in the neighbourhood with your work colleagues, where you can reminisce about the day you just had and the days to come.

Your Life On Weekends

Saturday mornings start with a donut from
Cartems and a coffee from 49th parallel. You spend your afternoons strolling down Main Street, picking up knick-knacks, trinkets, and shopping for clothes. Hop on your bike and head to the seawall, from there; you can either head downtown or make your way to Kits Beach, where you throw out your beach towel and read a book.

Dining

As one would expect from a diverse neighbourhood such as Mount Pleasant, the dining here is as diverse as the people who reside here. A true melting pot of ethnic cuisines, casual fare, and even fine dining.

Getting Around

Getting around Vancouver when you live in Mount Pleasant is as easy as it gets. The 10th ave bike corridor is an excellent way to go if you want to take the bike out, SkyTrain stations are not far off, and busses are abundant. Getting around will be the least of your concerns when you live here.

What You’ll Love

Mount Pleasant has a diverse range of people living within this community; your neighbors could be hippies, young business professionals, vagabond renters, or young families. There is a real sense of community in this neighbourhood, one where you know your neighbours’ names, and you do not feel the stress of the downtown core. Restaurants and bars here are plentiful, so going out and socializing is just as easily said as done.

What You May Not Like

Mount Pleasant does have mixed use of commercial and residential space, and although, for the most part, these areas are separated, it does mean that you may not be living in the quiet cul-du-sacs that you see in neighbourhoods in Vancouver.
