As a relatively young community, Oakridge is continuously evolving and growing in its features and makeup. The Oakridge Centre mall – Vancouver’s first shopping centre – is perhaps the largest draw that brings people into the neighbourhood. Langara College, which delivers several educational services to more than 23,000 students.
Oakridge has expanded even more with the Canada Line construction along Cambie Street, which was completed in August 2009. The Canada line provides two stations within the neighbourhood, Oakridge – 41st Avenue Station and Langara – 49th Avenue Station. The city is conducting a “master planning” process for the Oakridge Centre area, which when completed, plans to dramatically increase retail, residential, commercial, office, and community uses.

Oakridge is home to a golf course, Vancouver’s largest mall, and Vancouver’s largest redevelopment project at Oakridge centre. You will find several schools here, including Langara College. Being further out of the city, the housing prices in Oakridge can be more affordable in some areas, and your options of housing style more versatile.
Oakridge has many amenities that appeal to a wide variety of residents. From seniors centres and seniors homes, to malls and restaurants. There is also a large number of newly redeveloped condos, townhomes, highrise and low-rise apartments, and this area can accommodate many different requirements people are looking for when purchasing a home.
Oakridge is home to seven parks, including one of Vancouver’s newest parks at Oakridge Centre, a nine-acre public park under development that will be the first of its kind in Vancouver, located partially on the mall’s rooftop and partially at ground level. This innovation in park design will offer a unique experience for existing and new residents in the area and will act as a destination park for the rest of the city.
Along South Granville in the Oakridge neighbourhood you will find the houses to be Stately, elegant, and primarily upper-middle-class. The houses along Granville are tucked quietly away near the heart of Vancouver. Homes in this part of the neighbourhood have a higher median price than other areas of Oakridge.
Oakridge Centre Mall
Oakridge Mall was initially opened in 1959 by Woodward’s Stores, which anchored the centre until it was sold to Hudson’s Bay in 1993. The mall is currently home to many high-end fashion retailers, jewelers, clothing, and computer stores. Oakridge Centre is now the centre point for the Oakridge Municipal Town Centre Project, part of a Vancouver urban densification project creating a new high-density region with tall apartment towers much like Vancouver’s West End in an area now occupied and to be surrounded by single-family residences.
Schools
Educational institutions well serve Oakridge. Van Horne Elementary Jamieson Elementary, Laurier Elementary, Dr. Anne B Jamieson Elementary, and Sexsmith Elementary are excellent elementary schools in the Oakridge neighbourhood. Sir Winston Churchill Secondary and Magee Highschool offer facilities for the older children in the family. In contrast, St. Andrews College and King David High School offer private school options for families who wish to enroll their children.
Langara College
Langara College provides university-level programs and courses and offers various qualifications, including bachelor degrees, associate degrees, diplomas, certificates, and citations. Langara serves approximately 22,000 students annually through its university, career, and continuing studies programs. Langara offers Art, Business, Health, Humanities & Social Services, Science, and Technology programs.
Parks
Oakridge is currently home to 6 parks, with a seventh on the way. This gives residents the perfect opportunity to get outside, go for a walk, enjoy the green spaces around them, or join an ultimate frisbee league or softball team.
Cambie Corridor
The Cambie Corridor is an area that runs through Oakridge along South Cambie Street. There is a significant redevelopment plan underway here that builds on the distinct character and context of the corridor’s neighbourhoods to create complete communities with places for current and future residents to live, work, shop, play, and feel part of a community. By the end of this project, there will be 30,000 additional new homes.
Golf Course
Langara Golf Course is a traditional-style course located on the south slope of Vancouver. Built in 1926 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, Canadian Architect Thomas McBroom redesigned the course.
Your Life After Work
With the Langara Golf Course’s proximity, complete with its perimeter walking, jogging, and dog walking trails, Oakridge has no shortage of accessible green space. Complementing the Golf Course are the other green space areas of Columbia Park and Tisdall Park. The nearby YMCA and Community Centre add to the myriad of recreational facilities available. All these amenities make great ways to get your mind off work.
Your Life On Weekends
If your weekends are meant for shopping, there is no better place to go than Oakridge Centre, and with the new massive redevelopment underway, this area will only get better, along with your weekend!
Golfing
Langara Golf Course has beautiful contoured, tree-lined fairways that are easy to walk and make this challenging par 71 course appealing to players of all levels. The large rolling greens make scoring a challenge and, with its narrow fairways, accuracy off the tee is paramount.
Getting Around
Public transportation in this neighbourhood is superior and frequent. The main north/south arteries of Oak and Cambie combined with the wide, quickly traveled boulevards of West 41st and West 49th make this area one of the most accessible in the city. It is a short drive (or bus) to UBC and Richmond with easy access to the downtown core. The Canada Line has stations at 41st Avenue and Cambie and 49th Avenue and Cambie (Langara station). This has brought new access and vitality to Oakridge and promises significant development in the future.
What You’ll Love
With the significant redevelopment underway, and the numerous new amenities being added to the neighbourhood, Oakridge is becoming a community onto its own. There is such variety being added to this neighbourhood that you will find you do not have to travel to other areas of Vancouver to find what you need. With the new added green spaces, thousands of new condos, the site is adding more affordable housing options while also bettering the neighbourhood around it.
What You May Not Like
Over the next several years, as the Oakridge redevelopment continues, there will be a lot of construction in this area and a growing increase in density. This may not be the neighbourhood for you if you are looking for a quiet, rural feeling area. However, there are still areas of Oakridge that continue to provide this and will not be changing anytime soon, so be sure to get in touch with us if you like this area and want to find out more.
